Sei-Ichi Saitoh is a professor with the Faculty of Fisheries Sciences and Center of Sustainability Science at Hokkaido University. He also is executive adviser at Green & Life Innovation, Inc. which is a venture company on fisheries information services.
He received his M.S. (1978) and Ph.D. (1984) in Fisheries Sciences from Hokkaido University and began consultation and research on satellite remote sensing at Japan Weather Association in 1984. In 2003, he began teaching and research at Hokkaido University where his interests include satellite oceanography with a focus on remote sensing to detect different species of fish and plankton. He is a principal investigator for Second Generation Global Imager/Global Change Observation Mission-Climate program of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (SGLI/GCOM-C (JAXA)) which will be launched in 2015. He has also contributed to Calibration and Validation (Cal/Val) activities for several ocean color sensors. He was a co-chair for the MONITOR Technical Committee of PICES, and remains a member. He is also a member of the Science Council of Japan, and participates on national committees of the Scientific Committee on Ocean Research (SCOR) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) to promote international coordination.
